- Ecological Amplitude and Regeneration of Medicinally Important Threatened Trees in the Central Western Ghats

The central part of the Western Ghats (i.e. Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka) was surveyed for tree species and regeneration using belt transects. Medicinally important trees were more in disturbed evergreen forests while undisturbed evergreen forests had proportionately more threatened species. Out of total 19 species of medicinally important threatened trees recorded , only Knema attenuata , Garcinia gummigutta and Artocarpus hirsutus showed a wider ecological amplitude with presence in disturbed and undisturbed evergreen forests. All other species were either confined to undisturbed forests or were rare in both types. Most of the threatened medicinal trees showed decrease in abundance in the disturbed evergreen forests. Species for which seeds or fruits are extracted like Myristica malabarica , Garcinia sp. , Hydnocarpus pentandra etc. there was a lack of adequate regeneration compared to density of trees and are at double disadvantage of habitat loss and regeneration loss.

Investigation was carried out to propagate critically endangered medicinal plant species, Celastrus paniculata by using ischolar_main cuttings with different growth regulators. The various ischolar_main and shoot parameters recorded significantly higher in the ischolar_main cuttings treated with growth regulators as compared to control. The average higher ischolar_maining percentage (81.0) was recorded in the cuttings treated with IBA 2000 ppm against control (52.0). The average number of ischolar_mains per cutting was significantly higher in the cuttings treated with a commercial formulation Quic Root (19.23) followed by IBA 2000 ppm (16.75). The average higher field establishment percentage (95.0) was also observed in IBA 2000 ppm treated cuttings followed by commercial formulation Quic Root treatment. Quic Root was found to be the second best treatment next to IBA 2000 ppm for propagation of C. paniculata through ischolar_main cuttings.Keywords

The study assesses distribution and population status of Saraca asoca from Sahyadri-Konkan ecological corridor. Eighteen localities at various protection levels ranging from wildlife sanctuary to private forests were selected and spatially mapped to arrive at a distribution map. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated that the size class distribution of S. asoca from the sacred groves differed both from formally protected sites and private forest. S. asoca trees from sacred groves had the highest mean girth at breast height (GBH) values than the other two protection levels. GBH of S. asoca was in inverse proportion with the cumulative disturbance index.Keywords

There has been a growing concern about the increasing number of species that are globally threatened. Developmental projects, and increased dependence on forests both for sustenance and livelihood have rendered many species threatened. In the Indian context, more than 150 species are critically endangered and require immediate intervention to sustain their populations. A number of plant species are destructively extracted solely from the forests. Apart from anthropogenic threats, several species are threatened due to invasive species and climate change. In the light of increasing and continued threats, species recovery is the only viable option for restoring many of them from extinction. Here, we review the existing recovery programmes in the country and suggest a comprehensive approach in the conservation and recovery of many of the critically endangered species. We highlight issues that need to be addressed and discuss strategies for recovering the critically endangered species in the country.Keywords
